About Us
Living on a farm fosters an affinity with the seasons and the natural rhythm of country life. Over the years I have learnt from and shared these experiences. Visitors to the farm have commented on the breathtaking views and the peacefulness that they’ve felt whilst here. It was whilst reflecting upon these experiences that the idea of Ladderstile Retreat was born.
Since we welcomed our first guests back in 2009 we have met so many lovely people!
Their comments have strengthened my belief of the value of taking time to connect with nature and to appreciate the natural beauty of the countryside.
Natural relaxation around the farm
During your stay, you`re welcome to enjoy the 120 acres of farm land. “Follow our farm walk”. Dotted around are natural sitting places where you can simply absorb the view and listen to the natural sounds of the countryside, paint or take photographs. From the garden room watch families of woodpeckers, nut hatches and finches to name but a few feed and entertain you at the bird table right outside the window. Books and binoculars are provided to help identify less well known birds.
Around the garden are a number of nest boxes, the blue tit box with camera has provided us with our own mini dramas over the last few years as families of blue tits have been raised. Share our viewing next spring time! Wander through the rolling pastures and woodland down to the peaceful stretch of the River Dane that borders the farm.
You may catch sight of a dipper or see the flash of colour as a kingfisher whizzes by, let us know if you do. Allow the sound of the river to mingle with the other natural sounds around you, skim a stone or dip in your toes. Watch for trout rising and for those who fly fish bring your fishing tackle and as our guest you are welcome to sit and enjoy.
As the sun sets; Relax as the day comes to a close. Sit comfortably and watch as the light fades. Listen to the birds as they settle to roost. You may even see a barn owl as he starts his night time hunting. I`ve been lucky enough to see one fly close by, I hope you are too. Simply take in the peacefulness and notice how brightly the stars shine in the night time sky.
